Makerbotz 2025 - Primary Electrical Makings

Age Category

Age: 7 - 12

1. Purpose

The MakerBotz competition aims to inspire and challenge participants through a hands-on, problem-solving experience that empowers essential STEM skills and encourages creative innovation. By engaging with real-world challenges, the competition contributes to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, specifically goals 4 (Quality Education), 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production).

Specifically, the competition is designed to:

  • Develop Engineering and Design Skills: By constructing circuits and integrating them with 3D puzzle models, participants will gain practical experience in electrical engineering, design principles, and spatial reasoning, contributing to SDG 4 by fostering technological skills crucial for future careers. They will learn to translate circuit diagrams into functioning systems, troubleshoot electrical challenges, and optimize their designs for maximum illumination and visual appeal.

  • Innovative Problem Solving: The competition's challenge of creating intricate illuminated displays will encourage participants to think critically and creatively to solve design and technical challenges. They'll need to analyze the 3D structure, plan the circuit layout, and implement their ideas effectively. This process will hone their ability to approach challenges with ingenuity and resourcefulness, skills essential for addressing real-world issues.

  • Cultivate a Passion for STEM: Building and competing with illuminated 3D models offers an exciting and engaging way to spark curiosity and enthusiasm for STEM. Participants will experience the thrill of hands-on learning, connecting theoretical principles with practical applications, and see how STEM can be used to create beautiful and functional designs.

  • This focus on resourcefulness promotes SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) by encouraging participants to utilize resources efficiently and explore the potential of electronic components.

  • Empower Future Problem Solvers: By participating in the Makerbotz competition, young innovators will gain the confidence and skills to tackle complex challenges, both in their academic pursuits and in their future careers. They'll learn to persevere, adapt, and think critically – essential skills for success in any field and for contributing to a sustainable future.

  • Build Community and Celebrate Achievement: The event provides a platform for like-minded individuals to connect, share ideas, and celebrate their accomplishments. This fosters a sense of community and belonging within the STEM field, encouraging collaboration and peer learning, which are vital for achieving the SDGs.

2. Task/Mission
Tasks

Embark on an electrifying journey to transform a 3D puzzle into a mesmerizing spectacle of light!  On competition day, you'll receive a kit brimming with wires, LEDs, switches, batteries, and more.

Your challenge?
To harness your creativity and technical prowess, construct a dazzling circuit that will illuminate your 3D masterpiece.  Race against time and unleash your inner innovator to craft a creation that will outshine the competition!

Participants would build their own circuits with uniform consumable items supplied by Be STEM Ready on the competition day. These materials will include, but are not limited to: limited length of wire, LED, switch, batteries, connectors etc.

On the competition day, participants do not need to bring anything. They are challenged to carry out on-the-spot construction, testing, refinement, alignment and fine-tuning. Participants are expected to complete all challenges within the allocated shortest time.

Mission

Competition Requirements:

  • A 3D model puzzle will be given which  must be  firmly and rightfully assembled.

  • Participants must light up at least 15 LEDs at most to the 3D puzzle model for State competition whereas for National Competition day, it shall be as many LEDs lit up as possible.

  • Each LED must have a minimum distance of at least 3 cm from each other.

  • Secret missions might be allocated during National competition day.

3. State Competition Regulations
Video Submission:
  • Participants will submit their final models with lit LEDs through online video submissions.

  • The video must also clearly show the entire process of assembling the 3D puzzle and constructing the circuit. This includes, but is not limited to:

    • Assembling the 3D puzzle model.

    • Connecting the 15 LEDs and wires to create the circuit.

    • Testing of the LEDs circuit.

    • The model output must be completely visible from all angles upon completion.

Time-Based Evaluation:
  • Participants have to complete building the 3D model and design the lit-LED in a creative manner with organised wires within the shortest time.

  • All participants must include a timer in their video, clearly visible throughout the entire construction process, to avoid video editing manipulation. The timer should start when the participant begins assembling the 3D puzzle and stops upon completion.

  • Upon completion, participants have to show all angles of the output (front & back). One participant may only submit once, with one video showcasing the best attempt.

  • One participant may only submit once, with one video showcasing the best attempt.

 Pre-requisite Requirements:
  • The 3D model puzzle must be rightfully assembled during construction and upon completion.

  • "Completion" is achieved when all 15 LEDs are illuminated after item 3.8.

  • Each LED must have a minimum distance of at least 3 cm from each other.

Scoring card:
  • The 3D model puzzle must be rightfully assembled during construction and upon completion.

  • "Completion" is achieved when all 15 LEDs are illuminated after item 3.8.

  • Each LED must have a minimum distance of at least 3 cm from each other.

4. National Competition regulations
Competition day:
  • Each team will consist of 2 participants.

  • Participants are not allowed to use their pre-built circuits and puzzles on the competition day itself. They must use the provided materials given during competition day to construct and complete tasks given.

  • Participants must be registered as a contestant before they enter the competition venue.

  • Each contestant will be given a specified length of wire, LEDs, connectors and the puzzle pieces before the construction period.

  • If any parts of the puzzle pieces break, contestants should think of a solution to fix the pieces and replacement pieces will not be given.

  • If any electrical parts such as LEDs and connectors do not work as intended, please raise up your hand,  the parts will be first checked by the competition technician. If deemed faulty, a replacement part will be given, however no extra time will be given as participants are expected to focus on other tasks at hand while waiting for the parts to be returned.

Competition Period:

  • During the competition, participants will have a designated 1 hour construction period of the 3D puzzle and also illuminating as many LED as possible by applying parallel circuits. Once the 1 hour period is over, all participants must halt their progress and construction.

  • Organiser will reserve the right to make adjustments, add or delete challenges not limited to any secret mission according to circumstances of the on-going competition.

  • The judges decision is final.

Scoring Card

Goal: Assemble a 3D puzzle using a commercial circuit board and organize the wiring to create parallel circuits. Solder connections on the board to illuminate the highest number of LEDs.

5. Disqualification
